FRPendant plus de vingt ans, Jim Carrey a imposé son corps élastique et ses grimaces cartoonesques dans une myriade de productions populaires devenues cultes. Retraçant en archives et extraits de films la carrière d’un trublion du système hollywoodien qui rêva longtemps de soigner par l’humour une mère dépressive qui le plantait, enfant, devant la télé, Adrien Dénouette et Thibaut Sève dessinent en creux le portrait de l’Amérique en crise des présidences Bush, père et fils. Le documentaire passe aussi en revue la période Clinton, dont Jim Carrey a démasqué, avec force rires gras, le ségrégationnisme, les discriminations, le bon goût de façade ou l’écrasant pouvoir médiatique. Au final, il aura épinglé les travers d'une partie de la société américaine, devenue aussi grossière… que certains des gags de ses films. Après avoir pris des risques dans un registre plus inquiétant, notamment sous la direction de Peter Weir (The Truman Show, 1998) ou de Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, 2004), le Canadien, qui a fêté en janvier son soixantième anniversaire, se fait désormais plus rare sur les écrans, préférant s’adonner, en solitaire, à sa passion pour la peinture abstraite...
ENFor more than 20 years, Jim Carrey has imposed his elastic body and his cartoonish grimaces in a myriad of popular productions that have become cults. Retracing in archives and film extracts the career of a troublemaker of the Hollywood system who long dreamed of treating with humor a depressed mother who planted him as a child in front of the TV, Adrien Dénouette and Thibaut Sève draw the portrait of the America in Crisis of the Bush Presidencies, Father and Son. The documentary also reviews the Clinton period, whose segregationism, discrimination, good taste for facade or overwhelming media power were unmasked by Jim Carrey, with lots of fat laughs. In the end, he will have pinpointed the failings of a part of American society, which has become as coarse… as some of the gags in his films. After taking risks in a more disturbing register, notably under the direction of Peter Weir (The Truman Show, 1998) or Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, 2004), the Canadian, who celebrated his sixtieth birthday in January birthday, is now rarer on the screens, preferring to indulge, alone, in his passion for abstract painting...
