Décriminaliser la drogue : le modèle portugais | Decriminalise drugs : the Portuguese model
After the fall of the military junta in 1975, drugs quickly became a public health issue in Portugal. The country discovers freedom. He also discovered drugs, especially heroin, which wreaked havoc for two decades. In 2000, the country had more than 100,000 drug addicts, or 1% of the population. All social classes are affected.
The government is adopting a radical change in its approach. The law changes. When a person is arrested, they are referred to a "drug addiction deterrence commission", made up of doctors, legal advisers and social workers. We offer personalized medical, social and psychological support. Patients showing a real desire to get out of addiction can be offered a job and even housing, 80% of which is paid for by the State.
