In addition to their persistence in the environment, another major problem is the number of existing products ; more than 300 active ingredients are authorized in France. Insecticides, fungicides or herbicides, with more than 65,000 tons sprayed every year on crops, France remains one of the world's main users of phytosanitary chemicals.
Pesticides can be harmful to farmers ; in 2012, Parkinson's disease was recognized as an occupational disease linked to the use of pesticides and it also affects residents living nearby croplands and consumers.
Pesticides don't remain in the fields, they contaminate the vegetables and fruits we eat but it's still difficult to accurately quantify the harmfulness of these chemicals to health. One of the challenges is to measure the cocktail effect, in other words the cumulative impact of several substances that interact with each other over a lifetime.
